Real Deal Driver: 1965 Shelby Mustang G.T.350
This 1965 G.T.350 is offered with continuous California ownership history, a thoughtful description, and a not totally crazy fixed price. We need the genuine article to center us from time to time, lest we drift down the path of 4-wheel disc brakes and subframe connectors that so often tempt us on the clone cars. Would we ever want a six-digit muscle car that wouldn’t make sense to drive? Probably not. But you still have to respect this example for leaning towards driver instead of show queen. Find it here on eBay in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Special thanks to BaT reader Mike G. for this submission!
The price tag on this car is actually encouraging considering the 65’s that we have seen for an additional $100k at some of the auctions. The interior is believed to be original aside from the carpets, and the steering wheel is a model we’ve never seen before in a Shelby. The spokes on the ‘65 cars were usually slotted, so the nine holes in this wheel make for a very different look. The radio block-off plate and sweep speedo look clean, and the center dash pod holds the right early gauges.
Under the hood the replacement 289 Hi-Po V8 has been built to R-model specs with 10.25 : 1 compression and the right external accessories. It is backed by an aftermarket Lakewood bellhousing and a 3.50 9″ gives the car longer legs than the factory 3.89 ratio did. The modifications are sensible and reversible, and make for better street manners.
We like how this car is presented and think that is offers a good balance between the over restored blue chip cars and the more tattered street drivers. It is still nice to see one of the real 1965 cars that helped pave the way for Mustang tuning ever since.
